University of South Carolina Aiken Appoints new Executive-in-Residence for the School of Business Administration

Vice Admiral Charles "Chuck" Munns has been appointed as the Executive-in-Residence for the School of Business Administration at the University of South Carolina Aiken. On Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023, Vice Admiral Munns shared his insights on project management and the challenges faced by project managers with students in Dr. Terry Whittington's project management class. This course delves into the concepts of project management, placing a significant focus on cost and schedule performance.

Admiral Munns, drawing from his extensive experience in the U.S. Navy and as the CEO of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), provided real-world perspectives on project management, identifying ten crucial tenets of project management, and emphasizing their significance in ensuring the overall success of project execution.

The Admiral elaborated on how these fundamental elements played a pivotal role in various projects he encountered throughout his career. From the configuration and activation of a nuclear reactor in a U.S. Navy submarine to the recent Titan submersible tragedy at the Titanic wreck site, Admiral Munns shared insights into both successful and failed project management scenarios. In each instance, he attributed outcomes to either the adherence to or neglect of sound project management principles.

By the end of Admiral Munns' presentation, the students gained a profound understanding of the intricacies of project management and its wide-ranging impact across diverse business domains. The examples shared not only enriched their knowledge but also underscored the critical role that adherence to sound project management principles plays in achieving successful project outcomes.
